Student Development
Supported by Liaison Print Solutions
In an increasingly competitive graduate market, Durham University recognises that it must provide students with the opportunity to graduate with more than just a degree. The Team Durham programme prepares students not only to win on the court, on the water or on the field, but to achieve in life and succeed in whatever they choose to do after graduation. In addition to the leadership and organisational opportunities presented through involvement in student clubs Team Durham provides a series of diverse development opportunities for both undergraduates and postgraduates wishing to gain valuable real life experience in a setting where students can make a real difference.
Career Development Scholarships
In 2011/12 Team Durham has 22 Career Development Scholars working on specific areas of activity throughout the academic year. Each scholar is provided with a £1,000 bursary to access further professional support, and in exchange, they work with Team Durham staff for seven hours a week during undergraduate term time to develop specific projects related to their interests and skill sets. They are also provided with professional support throughout the year from experienced individuals from within and outside of the University.

International Development Through Sport
Sport in Action Zambia is a non government funded organisation which, through sport, seeks to empower Zambian children, facilitate the sustained growth of communities and develop important life skills of Zambian children, adolescents and young adults. All of our major fundraising events exclusively support Sport in Action, and a number of University clubs and individuals raise money throughout the year in order to provide much needed support. In conjunction with UK Sport, Durham sends students to Zambia to help coach and lead on projects in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, in the summer of each year. Recruitment takes place 12 months in advance. Competition for these places is extremely strong, and if you think that you might like to apply to go to Zambia in the summer of 2012 or 2013 it is strongly recommended that you take advantage of the other sporting opportunities on offer before you consider applying.

There are also a number of less formal opportunities to become involved in Durham University Sport and develop important skills. Many of the opportunities are listed below. Initial contribution at this, less formal level, is often considered as an important pre-requisite for the Team Durham Career Development Scholarship posts.
EVENT MANAGEMENT: Over the course of the year Team Durham run a number of large scale events which attract a considerable number of spectators and
participants. These include an annual charity rugby match (usually 4000 spectators), a fun run (usually 2000 participants), a charity cricket match (usually 2000 spectators), combined sports days for local schools, and a multi-sport College competition where over 3000 students compete in intra university competition all in one place and at one time. These are some of the largest student sport events in Britain. We are hoping to recruit a number of students who, as part of a team, will help manage the organisation, publicity and delivery of these events. Professional support to assist students in their development is available throughout the year.
Recruitment continues throughout the year.

WORKING WITHIN THE COMMUNITY:Team Durham has the largest community outreach programme of any University in Britain and each year over 250 students play an active role in a structure which has a client base of over 4000 people spread over 20 separate projects. These projects include students coaching in schools and in local clubs, working with athletes with disabilities, using sport to engage with hard to reach groups such as drug users on rehabilitation programmes and mentoring school children who are themselves in need of role models. Opportunities for student involvement are far reaching. In particular, Team Durham is always looking to help fund the qualification and support the development of student coaches to work in the community, no matter what the sport.
Recruitment continues throughout the year.

COACHING AND OFFICIATING: In 2011/12 over 15 coaching and officiating courses will be hosted at Durham University. Students are provided with subsidised
or free access to the courses in exchange for a commitment to give ten hours of their time to the College or Community sport programmes. Mentoring from senior coaches and officials is also available to those students who want to continue their development and, where the necessary commitment has been evidenced, further qualifications will also be heavily subsidised or funded entirely.
