Netball claim Division 1 Championship with perfect crowning performance

(28 January 2010)

Durham Netball Firsts recorded a seventh consecutive victory as they triumphed 48-36 over Leeds Met to confirm their status as champions of BUCS Northern Conference Division 1.

In a pulsating encounter in which the Palatinates showcased audacious attacking, determined defending and frenetic fluidity, Leeds began brightly, Durham running in narrow 9-8 leaders at the end of the first quarter.

The hosts raised their game in the second quarter, increasing their lead and increasingly relying on the counter-attack as they earned a 20-15 half time lead.

The second half saw Durham press home their advantage, wearing down the opposition with their controlled possession and seemingly boundless stamina.

Abi Ryan, captain, said: “It was a special match for us, and we’re obviously delighted to have won the championship with such a commanding performance.  We’ve been working hard in training recently on certain strategies in our play, and today gave us an excellent chance to put them into practice.

“We’re looking forward to our upcoming fixtures over the course of the next few weeks as we enter the playoffs.  It’ll give us a chance to test ourselves against some of the very best players in the country, and the whole experience will improve us as players and as a team.

“Katie Thorne, our goal-shooter, deserves a special mention.  She put in a fantastic performance leading the line this afternoon.  She takes her chances so regularly and so consistently, and we know that we can every confidence when we get the ball to her.  She’ll be an important asset for us over the next few weeks.”
