Durham University Badminton Elite Squad consists of a maximum of 18 boys and 18 girls who are selected during trials held at the beginning of the Michaelmas term. During term time, the squad members train on court three times a week and also participate in additional fitness training sessions. Before the beginning of Michaelmas term the squad members also take part in a fortnight of intensive pre-season training. Members of the Elite Squad benefit from coaching given by Peter Higman, one of the top six senior coaches in the country and a European Veterans Champion, and Matthew Train, a highly competent level two qualified coach.
The Elite Squad enters four teams into the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sports) Leagues. The BUCS league matches are played weekly (on Wednesdays) and provide the sqaud members with an opportunity to play competitively at a national level while representing Durham University. The Women's First Team currently plays in the Northern Premiership after being ranked in the top eight teams in the country for the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 seasons. The Women's Second Team plays in Northern Conference 2B. The Men's First Team plays in Northern Conference 2B while the Men's Second Team plays in Northern Conference 4B.
In addition to the weekly BUCS league matches, the Elite Squad also enter the BUCS Individual Championships. This is an annual event held across a weekend in Michaelmas term. Badminton players from Birtish universities compete in all disciplines of the game (men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles). As well as an opportunity to play badminton, the weekend also offers an enjoyable social experience and an opportunity to support fellow Elite Squad members.
The Elite Squad also enter teams into local leagues in the Durham area.
