About: The Boardriders Club was established in the Spring of 2002 by a group of surfers, bodyboarders and windsurfers and now has over 100 members. The majority of the clubs members are surfers and the club runs trips to cater all levels od ability. Members of the club recieve discount on watersports equipment and also lessons at the nearby Tynemouth. As Durham is located fairly close to the North sea there is a great location for most watersports. Although it is colder than many areas of Britain the North Sea chill can be overcome by a good wetsuit.
Boardriders is a part of team Durham and each year travels to Newquay to enter the student national championships, BUCS, and party with the rest of the student surfing population at the notorious Fistral beach. Last years result were a marked improvment on past years with the Mens team coming 19 out of 81 teams, and the girls 20 out of 40 teams. This put Durham as the leading surf team in the North East and future prospects look bright for next year. The club also encourage members to enter non university competitions and also runs trips to watch surf competitions.
As well as travelling to the annual BUCS championships the club also runs regular outings for the seasoned pros which go as far and wide as Scotland and Cornwall.
