Summer sculling camps have been running at Durham University since 2003. The camps continue to grow in size and prestige on an annual basis. The camps are run during August every year and are structured to cater for varying ages and abilities. They are delivered by the team’s experienced coaching staff who, in conjunction with DUBC students, ensure that all of the participants are given the optimum opportunity to learn and develop whilst on the camp.

The camps are run at Durham’s water training base at Tyne United Rowing Club (www.tyneunited.co.uk) and from their land training base at Maiden Castle in Durham. Athletes are encouraged to bring their own equipment, although there are a number of sculling boats and blades which are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Coaches wishing to be involved in the camps are also welcome to attend and support their athletes.

This year the camps will also have elements of education in the new powered rowing tank as well as both core and flexibility screening.

Novice and Improver Camp:

A new venture for 2013! Following on from the success of the Easter Learn to Row Camps, we will be offering a 5 day camp for juniors interested in taking up the sport as well as an opportunity for those who have rowed a little before to improve their technique. The focus of the camp will be around improving confidence on the water in all boat types; allowing everybody to build confidence in bigger and smaller boats.

There are both residential and non-residential options available and all equipment will be provided, inclding lifejackets for those very new to rowing. This camp will be fully based at the DUBC Boat House on the River Wear at Maiden Castle Sports Centre. All participants will be required to complete a swim test on the Sunday afternoon prior to the camp.

Junior Camp:

The Junior Camp was introduced in 2007, following the success of the Senior Performance Camp, that had begun to attract an increasing number of junior scullers from the region. It is a residential course, lasting one week, aimed at junior scullers of 14 -17 years. It is primarily aimed at involving leading performers from the current J14, J15 and J16 age groups, and provide them with training and skills to prepare for National Schools and GB Junior trials in the forthcoming years. The programme comprises mainly technical sculling sessions on the water, giving athletes access to professional coaching that they might not otherwise receive. In addition, several sessions during the week are devoted to land training, including the following areas:

  • Ergo technique
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Core strength
  • Goal setting
  • Flexibility

There will be opportunities for athletes interested in joining Durham University to look around the colleges and campuses as well as talks about admissions and the departments. Residential athletes will be accommodated in one of the colleges on a half board basis with student mentors.

Senior Performance Camp:

Started in 2003, the Senior Performance Camp has grown over recent years to become a major regional event. Attracting up to 50 single scullers, the course offers an environment for athletes to improve their sculling over the week and prepare for Autumn season. Some participants will be aiming for GB trials or competing at national events such as the Scullers Head. In addition to water training, the course offers a number of sessions to allow athletes to develop their land-based training. These include:

  • Goal setting
  • Ergo technique
  • Stabiliser strength
  • Olympic lifting

****Please note that this years camp will be the week preceding the GB Rowing sculling festival weekend and will be ideal preparation for those wishing to take part in this event!****
