Rugby Union: Current Students Heather Kerr & Justin Clegg Both Pick Up World Cup Silver Medals!

(10 September 2017)

It was a summer of rest and recuperation for many of our student athletes but, whilst many were taking a short break, two of our current students were competing at their respective Rugby Union World Cups.

Durham PhD student, Heather Kerr, is now a Senior World Cup Runner Up after England battled their way to the World Cup final in Northern Ireland last month only to come up against an inspired New Zealand who were simply too strong on the day.

Heather's story is one that should inspire any Durham student. Arriving at University Heather had never played Women’s Rugby but was, in fact, a Hockey Goalkeeper. Finding herself in the University Third Team, Heather decided that she wanted to try something else and that's where her rugby journey began. Durham's prop was part of the Senior England set up within 4 years and has been in and around the squad ever since.

Heather has already returned to Durham to help spearhead the Palatinate's assault on the 2017/18 BUCS title.

Earlier in the summer Durham's Justin Clegg (Grey College) picked up a silver medal at the Under 20s World Cup where, yet again, England came up against New Zealand. Clegg has now been capped 8 times for England Under 20s and will be hopeful of continuing his international career during the age group Six Nations over the winter months.
