DUBC's Winter Season and Pre-Season Update
(7 May 2019)
The Head of the River Race on the Tideway marked the end of the winter season for the Boat Club. Three men’s eights raced over the 6.8km course and a special mention must go to Georgia Dean from the Women’s squad who raced as a substitute in a TSS crew and became the first women’s crew to win an event at HoRR!
Three of our athletes did not have time off over the Easter holidays as they were preparing for the GB Rowing Team Trials over Easter weekend at Caversham. Lauren Irwin produced a fantastic result in her composite pair to become the top Under 23 Women’s pair after the trial. George Bourne also managed to come in as the second U23 Men’s single sculler and Oscar Lindsay raced his composite pair to a 5th place finish. All three athletes were then invited for further testing in the week that followed and are all still in the running for selection to the GB squad for the U23 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Florida this Summer.
The rest of the club returned to Durham on the 15th April to continue preparations for the summer regatta racing season. The first major event for the whole club was BUCS regatta which took place over this last May bank holiday weekend in Nottingham at the National Water Sports centre. Most athletes in the club raced multiple times over all three days in the hope to win medals against other top University crews. This is always a great weekend with people racing side by side in different boat types. The results were as follows:
Intermediate 1x: Bronze (Oscar Lindsay)
Women's Lightweight 4-: Gold (Maddie Orr, Ashleigh Mason, Alicia Schwarzenbach, Saskia Devereux)
Women’s Beginner 4+: Silver (Emily Andrew, Natasha Morrice, Sophie Chumas, Jess Tempest, Abi Riley)
Women’s Beginner 4x: Gold (Jordan Kingston, Isabelle Maxwell, Alice Slattery, Rose McMillan)
Championship 2-: Silver (Oscar Lindsay and George Bourne)
Women’s Beginner 8+: Bronze (Emily Andrew, Jordan Kingston, Natasha Morrice, Isabelle Maxwell, Alice Slattery, Rose McMillan, Sophie Cumas, Jess Tempest and Abi Riley)
Looking forward the club will continue to train through the exam period and the season will culminate with crews racing at Henley Womens Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta in late June and early July.
