'A Moment In Time': Celebrating the History of Durham University Sport

An Invitation

Durham University has a long history of offering its students not only a leading academic environment but also a thriving sporting community at all levels, creating lifelong friendships and memories. Today Durham’s sporting participation and results are better than ever. We invite you to join us in immortilising our sporting history through our ‘Moment in Time’ plaques.

The Opportunity

Durham University Sport is offering past and present members and supporters of its sporting community an opportunity to commemorate a sporting moment, victory, team, individual or inspirational personality which marked a personal ‘Moment in Time’ in sport, or to commemorate someone who is no longer with us. The ‘Moment’ might have been in University or College sport, a victory at Lord’s, Twickenham or Henley, or any other special sporting memory.

These ‘Moment in Time’ commemorations will be plaques located on the wall at the entrance to the Maiden Castle Sports Centre, each bearing an inscription which records your chosen memory. More details regarding the plaques are set out in the following pages.

The Objective

The Durham University Sport ‘Moment in Time’ plaques are an opportunity to commemorate the past while helping to fund future sporting infrastructure projects. Our first initiative is an indoor multi-purpose training facility that will also be home to our tennis squads (subject to planning permission). The ‘Moment in Time’ fundraising initiative will be ongoing for a number of years with an ultimate goal of £1 million over the next five years, and we hope this fund will help us pump prime future infrastructure initiatives.

Recognising your Support

In recognition of your support, all those who make a financial donation will be able to personalise a plaque on the ‘Moment in Time’ wall at Maiden Castle and will be listed in an appropriate University sporting publication. Visitors will, of course, always be welcome back to Durham to see their plaque in situ.

Shaped by the past - creating the future, the ‘Moment in Time’ plaques will commemorate the rich sporting history at Durham which enables exceptional people to achieve exceptional things.
