University Performance Programmes
'Enabling exceptional people to do exceptional things'
Durham has firmly established itself as the university where you can combine sporting and academic excellence. Alongside the university's exceptional academic reputation, Durham has finished 2nd in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) leagues for five consecutive years, and has led the country for both league and cup points since 2014.
Student Performance Sport
Our student performance programme includes sixteen sports:
Our programme includes British Rowing Performance Centre status, First Class County Cricket status, British Fencing Centre status, Tennis Foundation University Performance Centre status and English Lacrosse High Performance status. We also compete in the England Hockey National Leagues, the Women's Super League 2, the National Volleyball League and boast a host of international athletes across over 20 sports. On average we help to develop over 30 student athletes, across over 15 sports, who compete at international level each academic year.
In addition we have part time coaches in a further 15 sports with the objective of developing a further five performance sport programmes before 2020.
The performance sport athlete support programme is also extensive. Students can access a wide range of services including strength and conditioning, injury support, nutritional guidance and lifestyle management support. We work closely with sports national governing bodies and the university’s basketball, cricket, fencing, lacrosse, rowing and tennis programmes are delivered in conjunction with the respective national organisations. Few institutions more seamlessly, successfully and consistently combine sporting and academic excellence.
For the 2016/17 season Durham will have more than 24 teams in BUCS Premier Leagues, demonstrating the fact that they are all within the top 12 University sides in Britain.
We cater for over 50 sports, but at the same time we are always looking to increase our programme. Over the last five years the governing body for University Sport have sanctioned events for Men’s Lacrosse and Ultimate Frisbee, helping to signify the recognition that the sporting opportunities offered within Universities needs to continue to grow and develop to meet the demands of University students. As a consequence, if you play a sport which does not appear to be part of our current programme, please get in touch with the President who will be pleased to help wherever possible.
