Club Captain: James Lawton
Durham University Archery Club is a friendly active club which is steadily growing. The club caters for the full range of abilities from complete novices to fully experienced archers. For those who have never shot before and want to start, the club runs a 3-week beginners course which teaches both recurve and barebow and allows you to get to a high enough standard to shoot at competitions if you wish. Once the beginner’s course is completed, you are very welcome to join as a full member and compete for the university as a novice. There will be two beginners courses held during both first and second term, subject to demand.
Experienced shooters are welcome to join at any point during the year and we run 4-5 sessions a week, so hopefully at least one day will fit in everyone’s timetables! All our sessions are held in Hild Bede West Gym and there is a locked cupboard available if you wish to store kit there. However, during the third term we practice outdoors on the racecourse by St. Cuthbert's Parsons Field.
The majority of the club shoot recurve, and this is what is taught during the beginners course, but we welcome those who specialise in compound or longbow archery and have a club owned compound if people what to give it a try. We have experienced compound and longbow shooters on the exec who are always willing to give you a hand or advice so don’t be afraid to ask!
Club members regularly compete in the North England University Archery League (NEUAL); these competitions are generally fairly relaxed and are a great way to get to know other archers from different universities. There are separate categories for both experienced/ Novices are Compound, Recurve, Barebow and Longbow. (Same at BUCS) - All categories are also spilt into female and male categories, so no need to worry if you can’t beat your coach yet! We also compete in BUCS for both Indoor and Outdoor competitions as well as NEUAL competitions.
We currently do not have an experienced compound or longbow exec member this year. If this is something of interest to you, please contact the Team Captain’s ASAP.
