Club Captain: Bradley Appleton
Durham University Motorsport club was founded in 2005 with the mission of bringing the affordable and exciting motor sport of karting, where Lewis Hamilton & Jenson Button started racing, to the students of Durham.
As a club, we host the Durham University Karting Championship, held over 6 rounds on tracks across the North East; we are lucky to have an indoor kart circuit in Durham, and two quality outdoor circuits located nearby in Sunderland and Middlesbrough. This ‘arrive and drive’ championship is a fun & friendly competition. We welcome all abilities, from complete rookie to the experienced karter, ensuring we always have a range of abilities racing at each event. The club works hard to negotiate special prices, which are typically around £30 for a full afternoon’s racing with transport and safety gear both included
For those interested in a more competitive championship, and the chance to represent Durham at university level, we enter one or more teams into the British Universities Karting Championship (BUKC). With over 50 Universities and 75+ teams competing, it is truly the fastest and closest racing you can get on a budget, using high performance karts capable of over 70mph, and competing on famous kart circuits throughout the UK. Although the BUKC includes experienced top-level karters and students on dedicated motorsport degrees, Durham has an excellent track record. In 2014/15, Durham were crowned the first ever BUKC Intermediate class champions, whilst in 2013/14, Durham finished joint 3rd overall. You can find out more details about the championship on their website: www.bukc.co.uk .
The club also has an active social side including hosting karting events with other motorsport clubs from Newcastle, Northumbria & Sunderland Universities, and attending motorsport events such as BTCC, WEC & F1.
