Durham University Fencing Social Fencing
Durham University Fencing Club has the most depth of any university club in the country, whether in terms of our beginners or our more experienced fencers. Not only do we have people competing at the highest levels but we also have a large social membership. We run beginner programs every year with newcomers welcome every week which are led by qualified coaches within the club under the supervision of our senior coach, Laszlo.
Our training sessions are very social, particularly our main sessions on Saturday afternoons when everybody has the chance to train together. On top of this the club has weekly socials which can vary from just meeting up after a match to meals and even trips abroad.Mike Turner, Club Captain
In addition, we also welcome many who have some experience fencing but have not been exposed to the type of high quality coaching and training environment which we provide - we encourage them to begin to compete nationally, with medals at the York Open this year including an all-Durham Men's Sabre final. We enter 2nd teams into the BUCS competition and even have a long-established 3rd team on the Men's side. We are strong enough in depth that our Men's 2nds and 3rds even compete in the same league! Having said that, the 2nds ought to win their promotion this year, putting them one division below the Premiership.
The social scene is very strong within the club which helps with this as more experienced fencers lend guidance to others, a process helped by a dedicated social secretary - James Firth - who ensures club friendships!
