Freshers Information – Queen’s Campus Sport

Introduction

I would like to formally welcome you to Durham University, Queen’s Campus. Here, we pride ourselves in giving you the student, as many opportunities to participate in sport as we possibly can.

The Sport Development Team at Queen’s Campus is here to help you get more involved in university life through sport. We can help you gain new coaching qualifications or upgrade those you already hold. We can also put you in touch with local sports clubs and schools who will welcome your input.

Whether you are at John Snow or Stephenson College there is a healthy mix of college teams for you to join, including badminton, lacrosse, table tennis, netball, rugby, volleyball, and football, to name but a few!

An event for your diaries is QC Varsity, which we hold in June before you depart for a welcome summer break. Both John Snow and Stephenson College are pitted against each other in a series of sports to decide who will lift the famous College cup!

SCA

SCA is a long-standing organisation that involves more than 400 students from across the University in over 40 different voluntary projects. Whether you enjoy working with children, helping the elderly, being outdoors or supporting those with disabilities, SCA will have a project for you!

Super Wednesday

This is your chance to support your team. Queen’s Campus Sports Centre hosts the 1st Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Volleyball teams for all home fixtures.

Touch Tennis

Every Saturday is your chance to get back into Tennis. It caters for all abilities as coaching, matches and fun games will all be included. Touch tennis is played on a badminton court with smaller rackets and a sponge ball but trust me it’s not as easy as it sounds!

No Strings Badminton

No fuss badminton, just come along and play competitive and non-competitive games in a fun and social environment. Beginners to pros, it is open to all! Sessions are every Tuesday 6 -8pm, we look forward to seeing you there.

Back to Netball

New this year - Back to Netball provides women of all ages with a gentle re-introduction to the sport. Run by passionate and enthusiastic coaches, sessions cover the basics of the game including passing, footwork and shooting. Sessions finish with a friendly game to put the skills you have learnt into practice. Only £2 per session for students!

Play just for Fun

If the commitment of joining a college sport team is not for you, but you enjoy taking part in the occasional kick-about, then it is also possible to book the astro pitch on a casual basis for a small charge most weekends.

The Sports Hall is also available to book for students (free of charge). So if you fancy a game of badminton or a social basketball game please see a member of staff at the Sports Centre reception.

Health and Lifestyle

The Sport Development team continue to look at ways in which we can encourage students and staff to lead a healthier life through sport, leisure and lifestyle.

At Queen’s Campus we focus throughout the year on Health and Lifestyle issues. Events for students and staff include: blood pressure and cholesterol checks; free fruit drinks; help and advice on weight management; dealing with smoking drinking and drugs issues; yoga relaxation classes; head and shoulder massages and much, much more.

Exercise Classes

We run regular exercise classes on the Campus, including Spinning, Boxercise, Boot Camp, Yoga, Pilates, Ab-Blast and Metafit with plans to introduce more classes during the year.

Pilates and Yoga will be charged at £2.00 per class. All other classes are included with Fitness Suite Membership.

Fitness Suite

Our 30 piece Fitness Suite is full of the latest cardio vascular and resistance equipment supplied by Techno Gym.

The fitness suite also includes a strength and conditioning room, which can be used separately by college and university teams.

All our staff are fully qualified. If you require a fitness programme or any advice then please see one of our instructors. Is there a better way to meet new people and gain a healthier lifestyle?
