ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

We are now going into our ninth year of recruiting postgraduate overseas student athletes. We remain the only university in Britain to be offering such a vast programme for overseas students.

In 2009/10 we had 18 overseas scholars across the sports of men’s basketball and men’s and women’s lacrosse. We have grown this ever since and now we have 90 scholars in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s volleyball, men's and women’s soccer, men's and women's fencing, American Football, men's and women's water polo and more.

For the 2017/18 season we are targeting 100 overseas scholars within men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s volleyball, men's and women’s soccer, men's and women's fencing, American Football, men's and women's water polo and more.

Two of the biggest differences between the American system and the British system are:

  • There is no four year eligibility requirement. As long as you are a student you can compete for your university for as many years as you want;
  • 95% of our MA or MSc programmes are delivered in one year and not two years.

We are looking for people that want to keep playing their sport at a high standard for another year, have a chance of winning a national championship but, of equal importance, we want people that are keen to help develop their sport in a country where university sport and student participation is still growing.

We are about to begin our playing season but we are targeting National Championships in 14 different sports, and have a further 12 sports targetting at least a final four appearance. Without question their progress is, in no small part, down to the impact of our overseas scholars. We want to maintain this standard and win titles in other sports. We have an overall league table for sport like the Directors Cup in America. We finished the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons as Britain's number one team sport university and were ranked second in Britain overall - a position we have now held for the past 5 seasons.

STUDYING AT DURHAM

Durham is a truly world class institution. We are ranked 34th in the World for ‘student employability’and are now 78th in the overall world rankings(QS World Rankings). All taught postgraduate degrees can be found here.

You will be spending money to come here and therefore we expect the academic side of your time at Durham to take priority. Ultimately your postgraduate degree will be a massive help to your career and this programme is built upon extremly strong foundations: we have established our place in Britain as the university where you can combine sporting and academic excellence.

Durham is the third oldest University in England behind Oxford and Cambridge. It is also a collegiate university with 16 distinct communities. For a British University we are relatively small in numbers with approximately 17,000 students making up our student community. Durham is a historic cathedral city but is always a busy place. However Newcastle, one of the largest and most vibrant cities in Britain, is less than 15 minutes away on the train. More about Durham University can be found here.
