Rowing: Success For Past & Present Students During Busy Summer

(10 September 2017)

Whilst the summer represents a mini break for some of our students that is not the case for athletes within our Rowing Programme with many of them competing, extremely successfully, throughout the summer.

A summary of their most impressive results below:

European University Games
Success began at the European University Games with a Gold Medal for the ‘all Durham’ crew of Helena Barton (St Mary’s College) and Amy Polglase (St Cuthbert’s Society) in the Women’s Pair.

Home Internationals
There was a further gold for Durham student Katy McDonald (St Cuthbert’s Society) in the Lightweight Women’s Double at this summer’s Home International’s, whilst Lachie Ives (Van Mildert College) secured an impressive Bronze in the Lightweight Men’s Pair at the same competition.

Under 23 World Championships
Lauren Irwin (College of St Hild & St Bede and graduate of our Junior High Performance Programme) finished sixth in the GBR Women's Eight whilst Hugo Coussens (Hatfield College) narrowly missed out on a bronze with a fourth place finish in the GBR Lightweight Men's Quad.

Under 23 European Championships
Lauren Irwin was once again in action for Great Britain, this time securing a Bronze medal in the Women's Eight.

It was, of course, a busy summer for our former students as well and it was Calum McBrierty who shone most brightly, competing at the Senior European Championships in the Men’s Four and securing a fifth placed finish. He then went onto win Gold in the Men’s Four at the World Cup Series in Belgrade and then a Bronze in the Men’s Eight at Pozman. There is still more to come as he competes in the Men’s Eight at the World Championship’s later this month....
