DUHC W1s get their NL campaign underway with a point away from home
(29 September 2019)
The Women’s 1s kicked off their national league campaign this weekend with a short journey down the motorway to Leeds Hockey Club and after a very encouraging pre-season, the newly formed team were looking forward to playing their Yorkshire counterparts.
Making their first team debuts in a Palatinate shirt were Rebecca Daniels, Rebecca McConnell and Fiona Crackles who, after putting in a big shift over the last 6 weeks made the ever competitive final 16.
The opening minutes saw Durham crack slightly under the pressure and Leeds hit them hard early on. Ever priding themselves on their defensive intensity, the girls clung on and rode out the first quarter. Score: 0-0.
The Palatinates settled into quarter 2 and started to build better play going forwards. Daniels flashed just wide for Durham, closely followed by the same from Youmans. Against the run of play, Leeds turned on the counter and after a last ditch attempt by McConnell saw her receive a green card, Leeds’s PCA was denied by player of the match Louisa Bray. Durham were first to react and quickly manipulated the ball to the attacking circle, a goal line scramble resulted in Leeds somehow clearing their lines and the girls headed into half time still 0-0.
The second half saw some lovely link play from Kilner and Howell in the screen positons as Durham started to enjoy some more possession. However, another goal mouth scramble this time saw Durham defender McConnell bail out the visitors as they continued to block Leeds’s attempts on goal.
The final score remained 0-0 and although Durham were disappointed not to get the win, they still return to the castle with a clean sheet and a point away from home. It will be a big week for the Palatinates as they reflect and prepare to host Gloucester City Ladies this Saturday (5th October) at 3pm. All support welcome!
