DUMC is a dynamic and versatile Club which focuses on all aspects of rock climbing and mountaineering. It is proud to provide trips ranging from one day climbing meets to Yorkshire, the Peak District and Northumberland, as well as weekend meets with destinations including the Lakes and Snowdonia, and winter mountaineering in Scotland. There are also several indoor walls that are a short bus or train ride away.
With over 100 members the standard of climbing is of all levels, but the club especially welcomes beginners and has great opportunities for those who have climbed before. There is also a growing core of female members, and the club feels it needs more! The club can provide a lot of the necessary equipment needed by new climbers so don't be put off by the cost of gear you may see in the shops.
DUMC climbs most frequently at the Durham Climbing Centre, found on the outskirts of the city. It is a brilliant space with facilities including over 600m2 climbing surface, 25°, 35° and 45° overhangs, a massive campus board area and an advanced training board.
DUMC’s top twelve climbers get reduced cost annual passes to the DCC whilst the remainder of the club is offered reduced cost term-time passes, lowering session costs by £1.50 a session! This goes a long way to the training of the climbing team which will aim to compete in a number of competitions throughout the year. Pre-season training takes place the week before fresher’s, providing an excellent chance for those who would like to try out for the team to meet some friendly faces and get to know Durham better before term starts!
