Club President: Rob Dessington
Durham University Crusaders Rugby League offers a high-quality rugby league experience to all players. From novices of the game to established academy players from either code of rugby, at the Crusaders we are proud of the standard of coaching on offer and our ability to cater for any level of athlete.
At the club players enjoy high levels of camaraderie and a strong social environment providing players with fantastic memories of their time as a member of the Crusaders and lifelong friends.
Established in 1989, the rugby league club has undergone a steady expansion, culminating in the formation of the Crusaders at the end of the 2014/15 season.
Over the past three years the Crusaders have produced three international representatives and nine players of regional standard representing North East Universities (five of whom hadn’t played Rugby League until they joined our club).
Off the field the club also has a significant charitable commitment. Last year we undertook the gruelling Yorkshire Three Peaks, raising over £2500 for the mental health awareness charity, Andy’s Man Club, and the club’s official charity, the Stephen Gartland Foundation. This is just another way in which the club can provide members a far more comprehensive and enjoyable university sporting experience.
Your Development in the Crusaders:
We have created a highly beneficial environment for development and improvement of players.
The club trains four times a week, offering two pitch sessions on excellent, all-weather floodlit pitches at Maiden Castle and two strength and conditioning sessions in Team Durham’s high-quality S&C suite. You will have access to the very best facilities and nutritional support.
You will be coached by Dr Ollie O’Mara and Tom Hodgson; both are ex-professionals with Ollie having regional and international experience as both a coach and a player. He has unbeatable experience of the rigors of blending a highly successful sporting and academic life, making him the ideal coach for university sport.
You will compete every Wednesday in BUCS matches, and have the opportunity to partake in Student Rugby League Nine’s events as a member of our nine’s team.
As a member of the Crusaders you will have the opportunity to trial for various levels of representative rugby league from regional to international – numerous club members have gone on to attain these accolades in recent years.
We will endeavour to support you in your academic pursuits so that you leave the university with the best degree you can achieve, along with an enriching sporting experience as a member of the club.
