Shotokan is the most widely practised form of Karate in the Western world. Our club's instructor is Sensei Colin Young. Colin has been a member of the KUGB for 20 years and has trained in a variety of martial arts for 35 years achieving Dan grades in both Shotokan Karate and Shito-ryu. We hold 2 sessions a week covering all aspects of karate, a session focused on competition (kata and kumite) and a weekly strength and conditioning session. In addition to the normal sessions we also like to invite senior guest instructors to the club to take courses..

Durham University Shotokan Karate Club (DUSKC) is affiliated to the Karate Union of Great Britain which is the largest single style association in the country. Through this association we are able to hold termly gradings and also attend courses run by some of the most famous instructors in the country. The Club aims to teach both traditional and competition karate as well as elements of street-wise applications to give our members a more realistic approach to self-defence. We have enjoyed increasing success at both local and national competitions, in particular the annual British University Championships where in 2008 we contributed 24 points for Team Durham.

DUSKC welcomes people of all abilities throughout the year. We have a wide range of members, mostly from Shotokan backgrounds although we embrace those from other styles. You will also find that we are very friendly and hold regular social events throughout the year that are very popular and play an important part in our lively team spirit. Karate is excellent for improving your strength, stamina and flexibility, and not only does it keep you fit, but it can be a great confidence booster.
